A gem! I really liked watching Witch's Diner. This drama is 8 episodes long and has about 40 minutes each episode - this is another way to say that it doesn't drag. Witch's Diner is actually quite wholesome and full of great lessons. It starts off with our main protagonist, Jung Jin (Nam Ji Hyun), who opens a restaurant but quickly goes bankrupt. She meets Jo Hee Ra (Song Ji Hyo), who wants to rent the place to open her own restaurant called the Witch's Diner. Hee Ra is a witch herself and she makes food that grant her customer wishes in turn for a price that Hee Ra names (not money, usually a body part). After having her wish granted, Jin works at the restaurant to warn customers about how dangerous their wish can be.
In this drama, witches are more like guardians to people. They watch over others and grant wishes for those who are in despair. I thought it was cute that they brought in references to Harry Potter - the mandrake and brooms. My favorite part was when the witch brought out the mandrake and the mandrake started talking to Jin's surprise and the witch goes, "Well duh it talks, it's a mandrake." And then Hee Ra brings out the broom and Jin goes, "Do you ride this around?!", in which Hee Ra goes, "Um, no? That's for cleaning" like it's obvious.
I love that even though this drama is fantasy-based, it's still very relatable and teaches many life lessons with each of the customers we meet. First of all, we learn from the very beginning to be careful of what you wish for. Jin made a wish out of anger and didn't think things through and it caused many things that made her feel guilty about. Another theme was that what goes around comes around. People who acted up will pay a price, and if you do good, you'd be rewarded. Another customer also taught us that happiness comes in different forms and is defined by an individual. Even though one may seem pitiful to some, they may actually be the happiest they've ever been in their life. I thought all of these lessons were so beautifully strung together.
I loved our characters as well. To be quite honest, I'm not a huge fan of Nam Ji Hyun, but she does such great dramas. Her character in this drama went through a lot of character development and I'm a sucker for those. I do wish that Chae Jong Hyeop's character, Gil Yong played a bigger role. We got to see Gil Yong's school life a little, but it never developed into a plot line like I thought it would. He also didn't get a love line like I thought he would either (but I totally love that there isn't a real love line in this drama. It isn't really important in this drama and love lines tend to drag.) He just seemed to be there, but I guess that makes sense because he's supposed to be Jin's shadow and clean up after her.
4.5/5 - As creepy as it might seem, it's actually not and I really enjoyed watching!
