Tatsächlich lassen sich alle Bestandteile eines solchen optischen Schaltkreises auch auf Silizium aufbauen. Mit einer entscheidenden Ausnahme: Der Laser, der benötigt wird, um als Lichtquelle zu dienen, war nur schwer mit den grundlegenden Eigenschaften des Siliziums in Einklang zu bringen. Lange Zeit war es daher zwar möglich, leistungsstarke optische Schaltkreise zu konstruieren. Die Integration des Lasers war aber so aufwändig, dass bisher kein massentaugliches Produkt daraus entstanden ist. Nun aber könnte auf diesem Gebiet ein entscheidender Durchbruch gelungen sein. Denn die Doktorandin Khadijeh Miarabbas Kiani an der McMaster University in Kanada hat einen Weg gefunden, um unkompliziert mit einem Laser Licht auf einem Silizium-Chip zu erzeugen.

Die Lösung kann in die vorhandenen Fertigungsprozesse integriert werden
Zunächst war sie von ihrem Erfolg selbst überrascht. Weil aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie sonst niemand im Labor war, konnte sie sich auch nicht direkt mit Kolleginnen und Kollegen austauschen. Stattdessen wiederholte sie ihr Experiment mit verschiedenen leichten Abwandlungen. Anschließend war die junge Forscherin sich sicher: Ihr war tatsächlich ein wichtiger Durchbruch gelungen. Denn der Charme ihrer Lösung besteht darin, dass sie ohne großen Aufwand in die bereits etablierten Fertigungsmethoden integriert werden kann. Dadurch wird zumindest theoretisch eine preisgünstige Massenproduktion möglich. Im Anschluss an ihre Entdeckung bildete Kiania an ihrer Universität zunächst ein Forschungsteam. Gemeinsam gelang es den Wissenschaftlern dann, auf dieser Basis einen Laser zu konzipieren, der lediglich 0,3 mm² Platz beansprucht. Damit sind aus technischer Sicht alle Voraussetzungen erfüllt, um optische Schaltkreise in großen Mengen zu produzieren und breitflächig einzusetzen.
Von der Grundlagenforschung zum fertigen Produkt
Die potenziellen Einsatzmöglichkeiten sind dann vielfältig und reichen von der Laserdiagnostik über das autonome Fahren bis hin zu komplett optischen Computer-Prozessoren. Auch die Datenübermittlung per Laser könnte von der Neuentwicklung profitieren. Einer der Vorteile von optischen Schaltkreisen besteht darin, dass es keine elektrischen Widerstände mehr gibt. Damit entfallen aber auch die damit einhergehenden thermischen Probleme. Oder anders ausgedrückt: Eine Überhitzung wird unwahrscheinlicher. Dies wiederum ermöglicht zumindest in der Theorie, Chips zu entwickeln, die eine deutlich höhere Rechenleistung besitzen. Für das Forschungsteam rund um Kiania besteht die nächste Aufgabe nun darin, den Schritt von der Grundlagenforschung hin zur Produktion zu vollenden. Dafür wird man auf eine Zusammenarbeit mit der Chipindustrie angewiesen sein. Erste Gespräche wurden hier bereits geführt. Wie immer gilt aber auch hier: Vom Forschungsdurchbruch bis zum fertigen Produkt kann einiges an Zeit vergehen.

Sadly, the last few episodes were messy and the drama felt unessisary and almost like the writers needed a conflict so just chose randomly. It could have been brought to a close far better but it was still an enjoyable romance between a CEO and a 'normal' girl who becomes his Cinderella.
Although the plot was patchy and the lead couple lacked chemistry it can't be denied that if you enjoy CEO romances this does tick a lot of drama trope boxes. Despite there being lots of sweet moments and kisses it takes until the final episode for them to be an official and real couple which is a bit disappointing. It would have been better to have a few final episodes of couple moments!
The sub plots were interesting and although it wasn't that gripping it was a satisfactory romance between a cold CEO who can't touch other people and a firey girl who he is immune to. It is also pleasent to watch a Chinese drama where the female lead has a backbone and remains strong willed until the end!
